In 2016, members of the local raptor group discovered Pine Martins Martes martes on two nests of Buzzards Buteo buteo in the dunes near Castricum. In both cases the Buzzard pairs raised chicks successfully on other nests, a short distance away. Until late March, one of these nests had been occupied by a Goshawk Accipiter gentilis. A week later a female Buzzard had laid her first egg in this nest. The Goshawk may have deserted the nest before the Buzzard took over; the Goshawk built a new nest in the same territory and late April produced a clutch from which three chicks were raised. Her departure from the first nest may have been caused by a Pine Marten.
