Since 2007, large dredging efforts have been undertaken in the port of Antwerp (Belgium). The suppleted sands at the dumping sites Hoevenen and the Graandok have yielded a rich Miocene Elasmobranch fauna as well as a small Miocene Molluscan fauna. The extracted sands originate from the bottom of the Churchill- and Leopold dock at the right bank of the Scheldt river. The purpose of this article is to show that Miocene fossils that have been collected at these sites probably originate from at least three different sandy deposits. The Early Pliocene basal gravel of the Kattendijk Formation (with reworked fossils of older strata up to Eocene in age), the in situ Middle Miocene Antwerpen Sands Member (the majority of the fossils is presumed to originate from this member) and an until this moment possibly unknown in situ Early Miocene deposit, which is supposed to be close to the Oligocene – Miocene boundary.
