Sand lizards in the Schoorlse Duinen The Schoorlse Duinen constitute an important area for Sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) in the coastal dunes of the province Noord-Holland (the Netherlands). Records derived from the Dutch National Database Flora and Fauna supplemented with private records indicate the species preference for heathland in this area. Within these heathland areas sites with shrubs or trees with patches of bare sand in the proximity are clearly preferred . The latter are important for oviposition and successful incubation of the eggs. The national trend is a moderate increase. Potential threats for the species in the Schoorlse Dunes include concrete cycle paths, loss of oviposition sites due to succession, the development of drift-sand dunes and an increase of groundwater levels.
