Observations of Raven Corvus corax in Northern Drenthe
In an area of 20,000 ha in northern Drenthe two Raven pairs were followed from 2012 onwards, i.e. from the year that breeding was recorded for the first time in this region. The first pair changed breeding sites several times over the years, using nests 0.7-3.5 km apart. The second pair used the same site for four years in succession. Both pairs chose douglas fir as a nesting tree, except once when a nest was built in a larch. Nests in douglas fir were far from sturdy and frequently collapsed, sometimes resulting in the death of (most of) the chicks. Egg laying started between 25 February and 11 March. The pairs produced 2.6 young per successful nest and 1.9 young per started attempt. Most young were ringed and 14 were marked with a colour-ring. Families with colour-ringed young were seen up to several months after fledging, but were not resighted in mid-winter.
