In May, 2015 the author discovered among shells deposited as gravel on a walking path a left-coiled (sinistral) specimen of the usually rightcoiled (dextral) European valve snail Valvata piscinalis. The underlying genetics have been explored. However, the theoretical outcomes do not match the incidence of sinistral specimens of dextral species. Apparently, more factors play a role in determining whether the shell of a dextral species becomes sinistral.
