Desmid species disappeared from the Netherlands A number of conspicuous desmid species recorded from several sites in the Netherlands in the first decades of the 20th century after the second world war have not been encountered again. Most of those taxa, such as Staurastrum arctiscon and Staurastrum ophiura, are known to show a holarctic distribution pattern giving rise to the hypothesis of disappearance by recent climate heating.
