This article provides a workflow from observing and collecting molluscs in the field to the creation of a dataset in Microsoft Excel. ObsMapp represents a mobile application software that is highly suitable to record data in the field. After field work, observations can be uploaded to the internet. Observations from The Netherlands go to Waarneming.nl and observations from Belgium to Waarnemingen.be. Observations from other countries go to Observation.org. From these sites, your personal observations can be downloaded, which yields a database that can be opened in Microsoft Excel. Part 2 of this paper will discuss how this dataset can be used to generate labels for shells in the collection using Microsoft Word.
