Het gebruik van Muricidae voor paarse kleurstof

The author quotes the use of Muricidae in ancient history in the Old World for purple dyeing. In the New World the use of Purpura pansa Gould 1853 by some indigenous Mexican tribes for natural dyeing of textiles is described. Their traditional way of annual ‘milking’ of the snails was temporarily set aside by industrial over-exploitation. However, this was redressed by Mexican law in 1988 and currently only some tens of indigenous Mixtec people are allowed to continue the traditional milking of Purpura pansa.
