Herstelmaatregelen grote modderkruiper Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe

Kleine oude slootjes vormen in het huidige landschap het belangrijkste leefgebied van de grote modderkruiper (Misgurnus fossilis). Door de intensivering van de landbouw en de toenemende verdroging is hij in de tweede helft van 20e eeuw sterk achteruitgegaan en dreigt door de hedendaagse klimaatveranderingen op steeds meer plaatsen te verdwijnen. Binnen het beheergebied van Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe komt de soort nog op verschillende plaatsen voor, maar staat ook hier onder druk. Dit artikel beschrijft de resultaten van een uitgebreid onderzoek waarbij de knelpunten in leefgebieden en herstelmaatregelen in kaart zijn gebracht. Possible measures for weatherfish in the central Netherlands Old drainage ditches are the primary habitat for weatherfish (Misgurnus fossilis) in the present Dutch landscape. Due to the intensification of agriculture and increasing groundwater depletion, numbers of this species have plummeted in the second half of the twentieth century. In order to update and complete the information on weatherfish occurrence in the area managed by Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe, extensive eDNA research was conducted in the summer of 2025; as a result over forty relict populations have been identified. This paper discusses possible measures for restoring weatherfish habitat. These include the creation of biodiverse riparian zones, springtime inundation of floodplains in order to create breeding grounds, and improving aquatic vegetation structures by extensified maintenance.
