De muurhagedis terug op de Sint-Pietersberg

Het gaat de laatste jaren goed met de inheemse populatie van de muurhagedis in Nederland, die aanwezig is in Noordwest-Maastricht. Een scala aan beschermingsmaatregelen heeft daar gezorgd voor een aaneengesloten netwerk van leefgebieden waarin de muurhagedis nu voorkomt. Nochtans betreft het hier de enige inheemse populatie muurhagedissen in ons land. Het feit dat er in Maastricht maar één populatie aanwezig is, maakt deze kwetsbaar. Met het oog op risicospreiding is het wenselijk om ten zuiden van Maastricht, bijvoorbeeld in het voormalige leefgebied op de Sint-Pietersberg, een tweede populatie muurhagedissen te stichten. Deze herintroductie moet uiteraard voldoen aan de daarvoor geldende internationale criteria. Reintroduction of the Wall lizard on Sint-Pietersberg hill The population of Wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) in north-west Maastricht has increased in numbers and distribution in recent decades. This growth is due to targeted conservation e!orts combined with the e!ects of global warming. However this single autochthonous Dutch population remains highly isolated and is therefore vulnerable. Establishing a second population in a former habitat, a limestone quarry and its surrounding area, o!ers new opportunities for long-term conservation. After an extensive feasibility study and testing against IUCN criteria, the ‘Oehoevallei’ (Eagle-owl Valley) in the former ENCI quarry seemed most suitable for reintroduction. In 2024 and 2025, professionals transferred 184 Wall lizards from north-west Maastricht to this valley. In the coming years the monitoring will be continued
