Many species groups now have their own atlases based on distribution data. The Visatlas van Nederland (‘Atlas of Fishes in the Netherlands’), for instance, shows where freshwater species occur, what the trends are, and what this says about the state of our freshwater nature. Under the surface of visible distribution, however, there is an as yet mostly invisible layer: genetic variation within and between fish populations. The authors discuss the possibilities genome sequencing o!ers for more insight into fish populations as well as for their restoration. To safeguard the future of our freshwater fishes we have to do more than count what we see; we have to gain knowledge of populations’ genetics in order to determine vulnerabilities and potential for restoration.
