After the political change in Germany, Leipzig was the first Eastern German city to carry out a comprehensive biotope mapping between 1992 and 1994. The work was commissioned by the Leipzig City Council, Conservation Board, in order to get a base for nature conservation planning. Method, important results and assessment procedure are presented. Ashort description of the nature conservation concept is given, which was developed on the basis of the results. Examples of measurements that were taken to realise the nature conservation concept are also presented.
