This study focused on the northern spined loach (Cobitis taenia) in the northernmost part of the province of Groningen. This species was never reported before from this sea clay region. The results show that it is not uncommon here. The species was present at 11 of the 61 sample sites where fish species were found. The ditches in which the northern spined loach was found, were characterised by their ancient origin, low cover of submerged vegetation and a high fish biodiversity. Other species that were found at the same locations were (amongst others) perch (Perca fluviatilis), roach (Rutilis rutilus), pike (Esox lucius) and tench (Tinca tinca)..
