The raising of the second ‘Maasvlakte’ (Meuse Plain) started in 2008. As soon as it will have been opened to traffic and trade and industry, this will have negative effects on the dunes of the South Holland islands Voorne and Goeree because of the increase of the emission of nitrogen. As compensation new dunes have artificially been formed at the latitude of Ter Heijde by the government, because the dunes anyhow should be improved at Delfland. To this end ten kilometres offshore sand with the right grain size is dredged and deposited at about a kilometre in front of the beach. The trailing suction hopper dredger Oranje of the firm Royal Boskalis Westminster NV is working on this job. Besides sand other material can be dredged as well, as for example the tibia of a woolly mammoth, that found its way into the collection of the author. The location dredged is ten kilometres off the coast near ’s Gravenzande just north of the ’Eurogeul’ (Euro Channel). Much attention is paid to the conservation method chosen for this find as well as to its age. Finally a comparison with other dated Pleistocene bones from this region is made.
