This remarkable book consists of four parts; In the Introduction the historical backgrounds of the study are discussed. Moreover, the methods used in the author’s own investigations are mentioned, especially the treatment and staining of the cross-sections. The technical terms, used in the text, are explained in an alphabetical list. Part two describes the development of the carpophores of 76 Basidiomycetes belonging to the Agaricales and to Cantharellus. These descriptions, all of them based on the author’s own investigations, are illustrated by a large number of microphotographs filling 55 plates. Unfortunately, the quality of some of the photographs leaves much to be desired, especially those made with a high magnification.
