The existence of rudimentary stipules at the leaf-bases of Cyrilla and Cliftonia (Cyrillaceae), Cyrillopsis and of Alzatea verlicillata and Tristania merguensis can be established by comparative morphology and by ontogenetical studies. The forms of stipules observed in Cyrilla and Cliftonia reappear within the Celastraceae and Hippocrateaceae. The stipules of Cyrillopsis are very similar to those of Ixonanthes grandiflora while those of Alzatea and Tristania resemble the shape of the stipules frequently occuring within Lythraceae and Myrtaceae.
