Pure culture synthesis of ectomycorrhizas with Cantharellus cibarius

In a pure culture synthesis experiment, ectomycorrhizas were formed between two isolates of Cantharellus cibarius Fr. and the host plants Pinus sylvestris L. and Betula pubescens Ehrh. The mycorrhizal associations are described macroscopically and microscopically. Reisolated mycelium from the mycorrhizas was found to be identical to the original inoculum. The ectomycorrhizal status of C. cibarius with P. sylvestris and B. pubescens is thus verified.
