The ‘Sixth Cell Wall Meeting’ was held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, from 25 to 28 August 1992. It was the second time that this international meeting had been organized by Professor Dr M.M.A. Sassen and his research group. The editors of Acta Botanica Neerlandica have invited speakers of the meeting to submit their contributions to this journal. The cell wall meetings are appreciated as authoritative fora in the field of plant cell research and are attended by representatives of diverse disciplines. The sixth meeting covered a wide range of subject matter, with sessions on: Biochemistry and Cytochemistry of Wall Polymers, Ultrastructure of the Wall, Biosynthesis of the Wall, Lignin, Enzymatic Wall Degradation, Biodegradation of the Wall, Fungi and Yeast Walls, Elicitors, Wall Glycoproteins, and Molecular Biology of the Cell Wall. Recently, Professor Andre Sassen retired from the chair of Submicroscopic Morphology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. On this occasion the authors dedicate their papers to him.
