Many butterfly species in The Netherlands have declined sharply or become extinct. This is largely due to changing methods of agriculture, deforestation and urbanisation. In areas where non-mobile butterfly species have disappeared the only means of establishment back into their habitat is by rcintroduction. The reintroduction of a species is not to be taken lightly. Intensive studies on ecology are required. Kcintroduction must be well prepared and well carried out for it to be a succes. The Ministry of Agriculture has issued a Butterfly Conservation Plan in which ten conditions have been listed which must be met when a species is to be reintroduced. The Dutch Butterfly Foundation will sec to it that the reintroductions of butterfly species in 1990 and future years are prepared and conducted thoroughly so that the risks of failure are brought to a minimum.
