Stylurus notatus (Rambur) from Wisconsin, United States (Anisoptera: Gomphidae)

The rare gomphine, Stylurus notatus, has rarely been observed in the United States since the early 1940s. In 1973, an adult male was caught on the Potomac River in Virginia (Frank Carle, pers. comm.). Apparently, no other specimens have been taken since then. Recently, the junior author and W.A. Smith collected a male adult from the Wisconsin River in southern Wisconsin in June of 1987. A follow-up expedition consisting of Carl Cook, Ken J. Tennessen, and Jerrell J. Daigle collected a good series of larvae, exuviae, and patrolling adults from the Wisconsin River in July, 1987. More adults were later captured by Vogt and Smith in August, 1987.
