According to Mouthon & Loiseau (2000) only two aquatic molluscs of North American origin occur in the inland waters of Western Europe. A review of the literature has revealed that at least six maybe even seven American species have established themselves in Western Europe. The seventh species is Physella acuta (Draparnaud, 1805), originally considered a circum- Mediterranean species, but more likely an early introduction from North America. Never any fossil remains of Physella have been found in the Palaearctic area! Three typical aquarium snails of North American origin are likely to get a foothold in Western Europe in the near future.
