Until the 1980s, Hartstongue (Asplenium scolopendrium L.) occurred in the Netherlands predominantly on moist walls and only at a few localities plants were found that were growing terrestrially. Since the 1980s, however, the species has rapidly been colonising woodlands in the Netherlands, in particular young damp deciduous woodlands on clay or clay-on-peat soils. In this study, the expansion of the species in the Volksbos Lickebaert is discussed in some detail with reference to habitat characteristics. The Volksbos Lickebaert is a recent woodland from December, 1992, which measures c. 20 ha and is situated near Vlaardingen, Province of Zuid-Holland.
