Female assassin caught in the act A blowfly Lucilia bufonivora in the process of egg depositing was found on the back of a female Common Toad (Bufo bufo). This specimen, however, showed signs of an earlier infestation of myiasis, the mortal disease caused by this obligate parasite blowfly. Records of a second egg deposition on an already infested animal are rare. Since an earlier infestation prevents the development of a second cluster of larvae in one individual host, this seems like a useless strategy for the blowfly. Unclear is whether the blowfly might have been egg-bound or just accidentally put her eggs on an already infected toad. A recent study in Europe showed no evidence of myiasis infestation in living anurans caused by a closely related species L. silvarum. From an earlier study the latter is known to deposit eggs mainly on dead animals of various species, with a preference for dead frogs. In een eerder artikel in RAVON 41 werd de casus beschreven van een besmetting met myiasis oftewel huidmadenziekte bij een subadulte gewone pad, inclusief een uitgebreide toelichting op deze aandoening. Besmette padden worden elke zomer wel enkele keren gemeld. Een tweede eiafzet op een reeds besmette gastheer is echter zeer uitzonderlijk en staat centraal in deze bijdrage.
