Wetenschap in de 21ste eeuw: de digitale bioloog

Science in the 21st century: the digital biologist The digital era has led to an unprecedented increase in published manuscripts and open-source data, as well as community science data. The scientific bottleneck has shifted from data collection to data analyses, aiding studies absent of fieldwork or other expensive data collection methodologies. This status quo has opened up the potential for any communityto actively participate in science and further our understanding of the natural world from the comfort of their own desk. However, how aware are aspiring community scientists of this potential, and do they know the available free-access tools at their disposal? Here I provide a summary of resources and research lines that can be pursued. Het huidige digitale tijdperk heeft geleid tot een schat aan vrij toegankelijke wetenschappelijke artikelen en data op internet, inclusief die uit community science-projecten. De diversiteit en hoeveelheid aan openbare data is zo groot, dat een scala aan onderzoeksmogelijkheden binnen handbereik ligt, waar geen kosten aan verbonden zijn. Om echter vanuit het gemak van je eigen huiskamer bij te dragen aan wetenschappelijke kennis, dien je begrip te hebben van mogelijke onderzoekslijnen, evenals van de beschikbare data, openbare databases en manieren om die te vinden.
