A summary obituary of the great carcinologist, nomenclature specialist and biohistorian Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (1921-2008) is presented below. He joined the Netherlands Malacological Society in 1940 - indeed, a membership of long standing. All his life he was closely connected with the Leiden museum (National Museum of Natural History), where he served as curator of Crustacea (1940-1986), nomenclature adviser and as the unofficial museum's historian. After he had reached pensionable age (65) he continued working in the museum until a few weeks before he died.
