The otter was successfully reintroduced in the Netherlands in 2002-2008. The province of Noord-Holland realised that the otter will settle in the region in the future and has taken defragmentation measures. This paid off in 2016, with an otter sighting at one of the N236 wildlife passages between the Ankeveense Plassen and the Naardermeer.
