Chelonian reproduction in the Netherlands Fertility of eggs from free-ranging exotic Trachemys scripta ssp. in the Netherlands has been recorded with (minimum) fertility rates between 0 and 100%. Additionally , embryonic development has been detected up to phase 21 (of 27). The finding of a freshly hatched juvenile T. scripta is considered a likely possible occurrence of incidental successful reproduction in the wild. For Chrysemys picta, Emys orbicularis and Testudo hermanni boettgeri certain cases of successful natural incubation in outdoor enclosures have been found in the Netherlands. Although enclosures may have represented relatively warm environments, and T. h. boettgeri received supplemental heat from an accessible small greenhouse, incubation took place without direct supplementation of extra heat from non-natural sources. It is argued that successful reproduction of chelonians in the Netherlands is unlikely to translate to invasiveness, due to their ecological characteristics and threats. Terecht of onterecht?
