In 2020, two Red Kites equipped with a GPS-transmitter, born in 2019 and 2020 in Overijssel, the eastern Netherlands, disappeared from the radar. Field visits in the vicinity of the last GPS-positions revealed a plethora of conditions conducive to illegal persecution, such as dead raptors (probably poisoned, both hidden in a badger’s burrow), attitudes of local farmers (avid hunters), presence of trapping cage and known histories of raptor persecution (shooting and poisoning). Sender failure is unlikely, as sender type used since 2017 had so far produced impeccable results.
