During inventorying the molluscs of Amsterdam (de Bruyne & Neckheim eds., 2001) we found many shells of the genus Candidula, but it was not always easy to distinguish the shells of Candidula intersecta and Candidula gigaxii. Shells of some populations in Amsterdam did not always show the specific characteristics of the species. This provoked me to write about the determination of both species. The author compares shells of the species of the genus Candidula from the surroundings of Amsterdam but also discusses shells that are collected from outside of Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The distribution range of both species is mentioned.
