Pacific oysters kill periwinkles
Spirula , Volume 371 p. 140- 140
ln drift, high on the Wadden Sea coast of Texel, a number of periwinkles (Littorina littorea) were found with one or two much larger Pacific oysters ( Crassostrea gigas) attached to them. The oyster shells were empty, hut still articulated. The periwinkles had recently died as indicated by the presence of remains of the anima! and some still had their operculum. Apparently the ( empty?) oysters were transported by waves during a storm to this place high on the coast and the periwinkles had been unable to return to the sea.
