Personal reminiscences of Dr. J.G.J. Kuiper (1914-2011) cover a period of 63 years. As a college student the author made his acquaintance in 1948. Kuiper introduced him to non-marine molluscs and to the Netherlands Malacological Society, two events that greatly influenced the (professional) life of the author. In many respects Kuiper represents a pioneer in malacology in The Netherlands. He gained international recognition and an honorary doctorate of the University of Amsterdam (1984) by his studies of Pisidium world-wide. As regards scientific papers, Kuiper also was a generous author. He created a mythical foundation (‘Baudonfonds’) that financially supported his publications (e.g., Kuiper, 1984: 52). In addition his interests covered a very wide field, also outside the strict confines of malacology.
