A sinistral Gibberula and Granulina from Crete, Mediterranean Sea
Spirula , Volume 383 p. 127- 128
Finds are reported of sinistral specimens of Gibberula philippii (Monterosato, 1877) and Granulina marginata (Bivona, 1832) in Elafonisi, Crete. The literature on marginelliform species, in total 25 (Cossignani & Ardovini, 2011), living in the Mediterranean Sea with known sinistral specimens is reviewed. It is concluded that of certainly six species sinistral specimens are known. Finds of marginelliform sinistral specimens in the Mediterranean Sea are more or less occurring on a regular basis. However, the find of sinistral specimens of two different species in the same shellgrit sample can be considered extraordinary.
