This is a note to announce the death of Dr. Jacob van der Land (1935-2011), curator of worms and chief marine biologist in the National Museum of Natural History (now NCB/Naturalis), Leiden, 1964-2000. He acted as leader of major marine expeditions in the eastern Atlantic and western Indian Oceans, and Indonesia, where molluscs among the material obtained played a prominent role. He successfully encouraged specialists to work on this material. He was also involved in the organisation of marine research, nationally and internationally. In the museum he made a name for himself as a helminthologist and early computer specialist. One of his other achievements was organizing the move from the old building in the centre of Leiden to the newly erected complex on the edge of town.
