Dr. Bernard Verdcourt died on October 25, 2011. He had a long career as a systematic botanist, mainly working on the flora of East Africa, initially in Nairobi and later in Kew. At the same time he was a specialist in the non-marine Mollusca of East Africa and he prolifically published on this subject. He also had other biological interests such as the alien fauna of the glasshouses in the National Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London. This obituary presents a summary sketch of his life and work combined with some personal reminiscences of the author.
