On 11 December 2011 and 14 October 2012 specimens of the Veined rapa whelk Rapana venosa were found on Dutch beaches. As of 2005 living specimens had been caught by fishing boats on the Netherland’s Continental Platform (NCP), e.g. within 12 miles out of the coast of The Hague (Scheveningen). The recent records of the Veined rapa whelk from Dutch beaches suggest expansion of this exotic carnivorous gastropod in the North Sea.
