In 2011 a population of the Hollowed glass snail Zonitoides excavatus (Alder, 1830) was found in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. Zonitoides excavatus is quite common in the adjacent Dutch province of Noord-Brabant and also occurs at nearby sites in Belgium. The newly established locality in Limburg is Wijffelterbroek (municipality of Weert), close to the borders with Noord-Brabant and Belgium. The absence of the species from elsewhere in northem-and mid-Limburg may be explained by the historica! exploitation of woodland in that province. In Limburg woods were frequently chopped down for domestic use; Zonitoides excavatus seems to prefer habitats in woods left undisturbed for at least five decades.
