A first survey of the terrestrial gastropods on the Nollekes, Terschelling, province of Friesland
Spirula , Volume 396 p. 6- 7
In the autumns of 2012 and 2013 brief surveys took place of the mollusc fauna of the Nollekes on Terschelling, one of the Frisian islands between the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. The Nollekes was formerly a garbage dump in the dunes east of Halfweg. During the years 2009-2010 this dump was buried under an enormous load of soil taken from valleys in the nearby dunes. Today, the Nollekes serves as an open air theatre. When not in use for cultural events the area is grazed by sheep. The surveys revealed the presence of 13 species of terrestrial gastropods: 11 snails and two slugs. Predation on the larger snails (Cepaea nemoralis, Cornu aspersum and Monacha cantiana) occurs by the Songthrush Turdus philomelos, while the Carrion beetle Phosphuga atrata is a predator of at least Monacha cantiana.
