Areas protected for snails in the Netherlands

Desmoulins whorl snail Vertigo moulinsiana, the Narrow-mouthed whorl snail Vertigo angustior and the Ramshorn snail Anisus vorticulus occur in the Netherlands and are protected by the European Habitats Directive. This means that their habitats in the Netherlands must be protected, and the Dutch government has designated Special Areas of Conservation (‘Natura-2000 sites’) for these three snail species. The selected sites cover the most important populations within Natura-2000 sites, as well as the geographical range within the Netherlands. However, the majority of populations of Anisus vorticulus live in agricultural areas outside the Natura-2000 sites. Next, objectives are formulated with respect to the maintenance and expansion of the snail populations. Conservation management plans aiming to meet the formulated objectives are in preparation.
