In the Netherlands, Special Areas of Conservation have been designated to protect mollusc species included in Annex II of the European Habitats Directive: Desmoulins whorl snail Vertigo moulinsiana, the Narrow-mouthed whorl snail Vertigo angustior and the Ramshorn snail Anisus vorticulus. Based on knowledge on the habitat requirements of these species, the authors describe which conservation measures are appropriate to reach or maintain a favourable conservation status for these species, and which measures are inappropriate. In particular, attention is drawn to the negative effects of measures to restore the also-protected Habitat type ‘fixed coastal dunes’ or ‘grey dunes’ (consisting of removal of shrubs and top soil, followed by cattle grazing) on populations of Vertigo angustior.
