Een tibiafragment van Hystrix sp., een stekelvarken, van het Banjaardstrand, Noord-Beveland, Zeeland

Summary A proximal portion of a fossil left tibia of a porcupine, Hystrix sp., most probably Hystrix refossa Gervais, 1852, collected on the Banjaardstrand (Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, the Netherlands), is the subject of this short note. It constitutes the first fossil record of Hystrix sp. from the North Sea between the British Isles and the Netherlands, off the coast of the province of Zeeland. This particular specimen is registered in the private collection of A. Cardol under number 438. The bone is described and compared with a significantly smaller tibia of Hystrix cristata Linnaeus, 1758, as well as with tibia of Hystrix refossa, which is a well-known species in the European fossil record. In addition, the possibly early Pleistocene age of this skeletal element, the faunal assemblage to which Hystrix refossa belonged, as well as material of Hystrix refossa from the lower Pleistocene of the classic locality of Tegelen in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands, are considered here. A right elbow (distal portion of a humerus and proximal part of an ulna) of the Tegelen porcupine, the sole record of a Pleistocene porcupine in the Netherlands to date, forms part of the collections of the Natural History Museum of Maastricht, bearing collection numbers NHMM 00612-1 and 00612-2. Samenvatting Een proximaal deel van een fossiel linker tibia (scheenbeen) van een stekelvarken Hystrix sp., mogelijk Hystrix refossa, Gervais 1852, gevonden op het Banjaardstrand, Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, is het onderwerp van deze vondstmelding. Dit is de eerste melding van een vondst van Hystrix sp. uit de Noordzee. Het fossiel (collectie A. Cardol, nummer 438) wordt beschreven en er wordt een vergelijking gemaakt met een tibia van de recente Hystrix cristata Linnaeus, 1758 en met een fossiele tibia van een Hystrix refossa, een soort die ook bekend is uit het Pleistoceen van Europa. Ook wordt aandacht besteed aan de mogelijke ouderdom van het skeletdeel, de fauna waarvan Hystrix refossa deel van heeft uitgemaakt en de vondsten van dit stekelvarken uit de Klei van de klassieke vroeg-pleistocene vindplaats Tegelen, Limburg
