Persecution in The Netherlands was recorded via autopsies of raptors found dead in the field, and by checking nests for human-caused failures. Poisoning was recorded three times (Buzzards). Human-disturbed nests were recorded 23 times, with Buzzards and Marsh Harriers the most frequent victims (respectively 1.3 and 2.8% of all recorded nests failed because of human disturbance). Based on the sample of 2959 raptor nests, and the relative frequency of species-specific nest destruction, it is calculated that at least 231 nests must have been disturbed or destroyed in 2022, intentionally or as collateral damage caused by management measures (especially in nature reserves), farming, construction, maintenance and recreation. The frequency of disturbance was less than in 2021, possibly because of a relaxation of Covid-19 related measures that had resulted in a steep increase of activities around homes and in nature reserves in 2020 and especially in 2021. Another serious threat caused by man is avian influenza (H5N1), which in 2022 wreaked havoc among wild birds including raptors (positive tests for White-tailed Eagle, Hen Harrier, Buzzard, Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine Falcon).
