Spraying crops with a water canon during the hot summer of 2023 resulted in nest desertion by a pair of Marsh Harriers. During a nest visit, intended to measure and ring the nestlings, a single survivor (out of four chicks) was found but in poor condition (male, 402 g at an age of 35 days old). It was taken home and fed with day-old chickens, mice, quails and meat. Within a week its body mass had increased to 508 g. It was then transferred to a nest with same-age young in good condition (suggesting ample food supply), and eventually successfully fledged with its unrelated siblings.
