Half a century of decline of Auriculinella bidentata (Montagu, 1808) in the Netherlands

The development of the population of the intertidal pulmonate snail Auriculinella bidentata (Montagu, 1808) in the Netherlands was investigated. Locations where the snail was found in 1960-1965 were revisited in 2000-2015. At 83% of the locations (34 of 41) A. bidentata has disappeared. For most locations the disappearance can be clearly related to coastal defence works resulting in the disappearance of tides, replacement of seawater by freshwater and, more recently, complete removal of the habitat.
