The unpalatable rest of an old snail meal from Sinai, Egypt
Spirula , Volume 403 p. 14- 14
An old shell of Lambis truncate sebae confiscated together with some other shells from a tourist returning from Sinai, Egypt, near the border crossing of Taba, south of Elat, Israel, is briefly described. The shell shows a large hole on the dorsal side of the penultimate whorl. By using the hole for cutting the muscle, which firmly connects the animal to the columella of the shell, the body of the snail could be easily removed and prepared for a dish. This way to extract the snail’s body is similar to that has been used for ages to remove the snails body from another strombid species Lobatus gigas which lives thousands of kilometers from Sinai in the Caribbean Sea.
