In search of Desmoulin’s whorlsnail Vertigo moulinsiana near Sint-Jansberg
Spirula , Volume 403 p. 21- 24
‘Natuurmonumenten’, a nature conservation society, intends to create ‘new nature’ at the base of Sint-Jansberg (province of Limburg). Before doing so it asked a group of malacologists to reconfirm the occurrence of Desmoulin’s whorlsnail Vertigo moulinsiana in the area, to establish the sites where it would occur, and to lend advice on possibilities to expand potential biotope for this snail species. The group of malacologists confirmed the occurrence of Vertigo moulinsiana in De Geuldert near Plasmolen, where it lived on Lesser pond-sedge Carex acutiformis and Saw-sedge Cladium mariscus. Natuurmonumenten was advised to selectively weed out some trees and to spare the ditches with its vegetation on the edges.
