Shells from ‘the spot’ on Ameland
Spirula , Volume 404 p. 13- 15
Since my childhood I have spend many holidays on the Waddeneilanden. Ameland became my favorite spot for our days off. Although Hollum on the westside seems to be the most foggy place in The Netherlands, my family and I liked the friendly locals, enjoyed walking, cycling, playing golf and collecting shells on Ameland. In the dunes I found Cernuella cisalpina and a very fertile population of Alinda biplicata. During my evening strolls around Hollum I discovered a part of the beach were often large numbers of Propebela turricula and Cylichna cylindracea could be found. I collected over the years many interesting recent species, especially on a very restricted part . Possibly the large curved braker on the north side causes a southern stream which brings up and gathers the smaller and often fragile shells just a few hundred meters to the south.
