Land snails and slugs in ‘the Open garden’ in Oosterend, Terschelling
Spirula , Volume 404 p. 21- 23
The Bos family, living in Oosterend on the island Terschelling, has created in 2007 a garden where nature has been given a free hand. Since the garden is open to the public the author has carried out a survey of its terrestrial snail and slug fauna as of the autumn of 2012. In the first year ten different species could be recorded and in 2013 eight additional species could be added to the checklist. In the autumn of 2014 the wet carton method was applied for 11 days during which period 1005 snails and slugs were caught that belonged to 21 different species. Cumulatively 25 species (18 snails and 7 slugs) are recorded in ‘the Open garden’ in Oosterend. In the autumn of 2015 the ditches surrounding the garden will be surveyed for overlooked species preferring a moist habitat.
