During excavation and subsequent preparation at the Science Lab of the Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, a number of fossils were recovered amongst the skeletal remains of a late Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) mosasaurid reptile that can only have made their way down via dissolution pipes (‘orgelpijpen’). These include flint internal moulds of late Maastrichtian sea urchins (Echinocorys sp.), but also isolated lamellae of teeth of the woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius. In this way, late Mesozoic marine reptiles and iconic Pleistocene mammals became associated, apparently (albeit deceptively) proving the makers of ‘The Flintstones’ right.
