Breeding - and natal dispersal of Wrynecks Jynx torquilla
In the past >100 years Wrynecks in The Netherlands have shown steep ups and downs, ups associated with heavy rainfall in the Sahel, lows with droughts in the Sahel. High numbers were typical of much of the 1950s and 1960s, when during an extensive nestbox study on the Veluwe in the central Netherlands by H. Stel between 1958-71 (198-390 boxes/year) 225 nestlings and 21 full-grown Wrynecks were banded. Brood size, and ringing and recovery data were extracted from his original logbooks. Of nestlings ringed, one was recovered at the natal site as a breeding bird the following year; four other recoveries (1-2 years after ringing) came from breeding sites 55, 118, 185 and 425 km away from the natal site. Two full-grown birds were recovered at the same site the following year; a third bird was also recaptured on the breeding site, but 2 and 3 years after initial capture. Adults showed high site fidelity, whereas juveniles mostly dispersed and settled at larger distances. These age-related differences in dispersive behaviour are consistent with those reported in the literature from Germany and Switzerland. Recolonisation of lost breeding areas is probably correlated with immigration from juveniles raised elsewhere (as derived from breeding and natal dispersal). Local variations in dynamics are eclipsed by rainfall patterns in the wider Sahel, where most European Wrynecks remain during winter. The fortitudes of European Wrynecks, including the Dutch population, are highly correlated with rainfall in the Sahel. The steep decline of the Wryneck population in the 1970s-2000s paralleled an extensive period of drought in sub-Saharan Africa, whereas the recovery in the late 2010s is associated with a return to rainfall levels as high as in the 1950s and 1960s (when Wryneck numbers on the breeding sites soared).
