De aanhoudende strijd tegen de oprukkende Amerikaanse stierkikker in Vlaanderen

De Amerikaanse stierkikker is een invasieve uitheemse soort die tussen 2011 en 2014 succesvol van Nederlandse bodem werd verwijderd. In Vlaanderen daarentegen, breidde de soort zich uit tot één van de grootste populaties in Europa. Sinds 2010 wordt hier onderzoek gedaan naar de verspreiding, ecologie en bestrijding. Honderden vijvers zijn hiervoor onderzocht op de aanwezigheid van stierkikkers met behulp van omgevings-DNA (eDNA). Recent werden op deze manier nieuwe, jarenlang onopgemerkte populaties ontdekt. De opgedane kennis heeft geleid tot een verschuiving van een adaptieve naar een systematische beheeraanpak, met hoopvolle resultaten tot gevolg. Zo werd in 2024 een recordaantal van meer dan 100.000 stierkikkers gevangen en stellen we vast dat meerjarige beheersmaatregelen e!ectief zijn. Flanders’ fight to stop the spread of the American Bullfrog The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is an invasive alien species that was successfully eradicated from Dutch soil in 2012. In Flanders, however, the situation has spiralled out of control. Since its introduction and first sightings in 1996, the (meta)population has grown into one of the largest in Europe. Intensive research on the species’ distribution, ecology, and control has been conducted in Flanders since 2010. Hundreds of ponds were surveyed for the presence of bullfrogs using environmental DNA (eDNA). This approach recently led to the discovery of new populations that had gone unnoticed for decades. The knowledge gained over the years has shifted the control strategy from an adaptive to a systematic approach, yielding encouraging results. In 2024, a record number of more than 100,000 bullfrogs were captured. Long-term management measures have proven e!ective in significantly reducing, and in some cases, completely eradicating bullfrogs from invaded ponds.
